Coral and Thomas’ Magical Marquee Wedding with City Sounds

Last updated on May 31st, 2019

We’ve got a gorgeous homegrown winter wedding for you to enjoy today!

Coral and Thomas designed and created their dream wedding themselves. Every aspect of their big day came with an individual touch, from personally designed stationery to a hand-constructed bar built from scratch, to an evening feast of hot dogs made with sausages from the family farm in Warwickshire – which we’re assured are the best sausages you’ll ever taste.

Coral and Thomas’ celebrations went on late into the night, with live music supplied by City Sounds, one of the UK’s top wedding bands. This joyful occasion was beautifully documented by Clare Garrard Photography, who we have to thank for the amazing photos featured below.

We’ll hand you over to stunning bride Coral to tell you about how the happy couple met, her favourite wedding day moments, and her top tips for planning a wedding.

How did you meet?

“We met on New Year’s Eve 2015 at a mutual friend’s dinner party. Thomas was in control of the seating plan and sat himself next to Coral. We hit it off and the rest is history!”

How did he propose?

“He picked me up from work and took me for dinner at my favourite restaurant (Jamie’s Fifteen at Watergate Bay in Cornwall) disguised as a treat for not seeing much of each other due to being so busy with work, so I was none the wiser and happy to not question it! After dinner we travelled to our family cottage near Dartmouth for the weekend. We arrived late at night to find flowers, champagne and a selection of beautiful tea lights, still none the wiser (unbelievably!), I turned round to find him on one knee with a beautiful ring!”

How did you choose your venue?

“It was easy, I’d always wanted to get married at home. Growing up on a farm, I’d always imagined a wedding in a marquee on the farm, so we set about making this a reality. We also just loved the idea of being able to completely put our stamp on a blank canvas.”

Did you have a style or theme?

“Having chosen a winter wedding at the start of December, we wanted it be warm, cosy with a touch of wintery magic. We knew we wanted the reception to be dark, but twinkling with hundreds of fairy lights and warm lighting.”

How did you personalise your wedding?

“We didn’t necessarily have personal items around, however we created the venue from scratch, all from our own vision so it felt very personal. We were very hands on, and made a lot of the things ourselves, I designed and printed all the stationary, we built the bar from scratch using pallets and apple crates, we built a hot dog stand for the evening food, made from sausages from our farm. We named the tables after places we’d seen and travelled to together and we made the wedding favours ourselves!”

Who did you pick for your wedding entertainment and how did you choose them?

“We chose City Sounds to be the entertainment on the day, starting with a beautiful duo acoustic set then through to the whole band to entertain after our first dance. Having the promo videos on Entertainment Nation’s website meant we could really get a feel for the bands which were available and having searched through plenty of brilliant options, City Sounds just felt right. They were fun and energetic and we just knew they’d be a hit on the day.”

What did your entertainment bring to the big day?

“A very very full dance floor! They made the whole thing really easy, we asked our guests for song suggestions when they sent back their RSVPs, the band took all these suggestions and complied an epic DJ playlist of all our of guests’ favourites which they played between sets. And even though this playlist was brilliant, every time the band returned, the dance floor was instantly packed once again!”

What was your wedding playlist?

  • Processional: “Canon in D Major – Johann Pachelbel”

  • Signing the Register: “Organist”

  • Recessional: “The Wedding March – Felix Mendelssohn and peal of the church bells”

  • Afternoon drinks: “Afternoon acoustic sets by City Sounds with background music playlists the rest of the time. Being a huge Beyoncé fan, City Sounds ensured there was plenty on their playlist!”

  • First Dance: “All I Want for Christmas Is You – Mariah Carey”

  • Final Song: “Don’t Look Back in Anger – Oasis”

How was it booking entertainment through Entertainment Nation?

“Really simple, the responses were quick and informative, email confirmations and contracts meant there was no paperwork to get lost so we knew exactly what stage of the booking process we were at. We were able to communicate with the band about song suggestions and things we’d like. It was a really simple process which was brilliant as planning a wedding is very overwhelming!”

Bride and Bridesmaids

What was your favourite moment?

“When all our guests joined us on the dance floor during our first dance!”

Anything you’d change?

“Nothing! It was perfect!”

Any funny moments?

“I don’t think we’ll ever forget our miniature sausage dog Daphne relieving herself during my father’s speech!!”Coral asked whether she was allowed to say this… the answer is a resounding yes! – ed.

Groom, Best Man and Ushers

What tips do you have for other couples planning their wedding?

“Get the entertainment organised early, it’s such a big part of the day, the atmosphere it creates and the memories formed on the dance floor! Entertainment Nation’s website allows you to input your wedding day to see exactly who is available, so do this as early as possible as you want to get this right. You only have to pay a deposit initially so it makes that side of the planning manageable too.”

“Another tip – make the day you’re imagining. Don’t let other people’s opinions change the choices you may make, be traditional, don’t be traditional, be traditional with a modern twist. It’s your day, make it your day.”

What wedding suppliers did you use?
