Kentish Gents In The Spotlight

Last Updated: 19th December 2023

This week on In The Spotlight, we were fortunate to chat to one of the hottest function bands on the circuit right now: Kentish Gents! This talented 4-piece ooze cool the second they step onto the stage with their charisma, stylish flair and ability to flip familiar favourites into dance floor anthems worthy of a festival. If you’re looking for the missing piece to kick your special occasion off with bang, this exceptional pop and rock band is the one for you!

So what makes a band like Kentish Gents so popular in the business of events entertainment? Read on to find out…

Who are Kentish Gents?

“We (Kentish Gents) are made up of George, Ranny, Ethan & Matt. We’re a 4 piece band from Kent who’ve collectively been playing for over 50 years! We love playing together because it lets us live out our dreams of playing music for a living!”

Give us a wow fact about you!

“The members of Kentish Gents have individually played some of the biggest festivals in the UK (Glastonbury for example!) as well as working with some of the best musicians in the world such as Jack Hues from Wang Chung, Paul Turner from Jamiroquai, Matt Johnson (Mark Ronson), Brendan Grieve (the bass player for Sam Smith), and Izzy Chase who’s a backing vocalist for Dua Lipa.”

What can a wedding couple/client expect when they book you?

“We’re a band that has fun in what we do, we know exactly how to engage with an audience and get them singing all night long! With years of experience playing events, we know how important it is to be professional, reliable & memorable.”

Do you offer any optional extras?

“The whole band are multi-instrumentalists, meaning we can offer a wide range of optional extras from a jazz acoustic afternoon set with sax, piano, upright bass & drums to a piano/cello duo for your aisle walk. Let us know what you’re looking for and we’ll do our best to accommodate!”

Which song is your favourite to perform?

“Our favourites are the ones that get everyone singing along & dancing! Our top 3 have to be ‘All Night Long’, ‘Move On Up’ and ‘Three Little Birds’.”

Which is the song you can always rely on to fill the dance floor?

“‘Summer of 69’ always gets everyone singing & dancing.”

Top requested song?

“‘Valerie’ – for good reason.”

Top choice for a first dance song?

“Any song that has meaning to you and your partner!”

Favourite sing-a-long song?

“It’s a tie between ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ by John Denver & ‘Sweet Caroline’ by Neil Diamond.”

What inspired you to be musicians?

“All of us have studied music at university & have played our instruments for many years now. My personal reason (George – lead singer/guitarist) is because my brother got piano lessons, he got really good and I got jealous – thank god for sibling rivalry haha!”

Do you get along with each other all of the time?

“As a band who have played together for many years both in this band and in others, we have seen every side of each other and we’re still here to tell the tale… We love spending time together travelling across the country playing gigs, a good thing we all like similar music really!”

Who has the most annoying habit and what is it?

“I (George) can’t help but whip out some of the worst dad jokes known to man. I’ll have you rolling your eyes but at least you’ll be laughing! Knock-knock…”

What’s the best thing about being musicians?

“The best thing about being a musician is the ability to basically speak another language. Being able to communicate with any other musician allows a sense of freedom when playing with them. Also being a part of someone’s most important day, providing them with memories they’ll never forget, is a gift in itself.”

… and what’s the worst?

“Lugging what feels like 3 tons of equipment too and from the car, although I see it as a cheaper alternative than paying for the gym.”

Most memorable moment of your career as musicians?

“We all shared the stage opening for Alexander O’Neil in front of thousands of people!”

Weirdest moment/thing that’s happened at a wedding/event?

“A few of us witnessed a groom who had enjoyed his day a bit too much, being put into a car by his mother and taken home, leaving his wife behind to party! Surreal!”

If you weren’t musicians, what would you be doing?

“Most of us have worked the 9-5 roles before, however, helping someone with their IT question (turn it off & on again) is nothing in comparison to playing to a packed room of people singing back to you.”

Top tip for anyone booking wedding/party entertainment?

“Make sure you let us know if there is a sound limiter. The last thing we want is for the party to stop suddenly! Also, as a band, there is nothing worse than evening food coming out whilst we are mid-set! If it comes out during the band’s break, that’s the best.”
