Apollo Way In The Spotlight

Apollo Way In The Spotlight

August 24th, 2020

Dance-floor-filling greatest hits and high-energy performances is exactly what you get with Apollo Way! This incredible band consists of multi-talented musicians who can effortlessly swing from folky foot-stompers to rocky classics, RnB anthems to bouncing hip hop beats. The aim? To have everyone dancing like no one is watching!

Apollo Way are one of the most versatile bands in the UK, so it’s no surprise they are so in demand. Their hugely expansive repertoire, endless expertise and 5-10 piece customisable line-up is only half the story! Apollo Way also have a wealth of exceptional experience. They are an award-winning band who’ve shared the stage with a long list of well-loved artists such as Busted, Status Quo and Wretch 32, plus members of the band have featured at the West End in shows such as School of Rock, Wicked and Bat Out of Hell! These guys are just over-flowing with talent.

For our new spotlight, we wanted to find out more about this unique band and their characterful performances.

Who are Apollo Way?

“We are Chris, Dave, Ollie, Andy, and Ben – with Zeb and the horns, Mark and Nicole, depending on which line-up is best for the occasion.”

Give us a ‘wow’ fact about your act!

“We once played a TV show in France, which was a bit like a one off X-Factor that aimed to find the best cover band in world. They brought together nine YouTube cover band sensations and us, and asked the public to vote for their favourite. We won, even though all the other bands had tens of millions more hits than us on YouTube!”

What inspired you to become musicians?

“Pushy parents? Ha! Mainly a general love of music, but really the inspiration is different for each of us. Some of us feel we can only truly show who we are when we’re on the stage rocking out, some of us had parents that played, so there were always guitars around. Seeing really good bands live is always a massive inspiration.”

Which song is your favourite to perform?

“I like to perform our garage/90s rave medley. It’s totally different to what you’ll see other bands do and I get to rap. We do it in both our electric and folk styles and it always goes off. Our final set has these awesome medleys right in the middle – hip hop, garage, and 90s dance. It’s roughly 20 minutes of non-stop bangers and a highlight for us and the audience.”

Out of the songs that you’ve been asked to learn, which is your favourite?

“One couple asked us to learn ‘Raining Blood’ by Slayer, which we did, and it was amazing. Usually, they ask for nice first dance songs, so this was a welcome change and allowed us to unleash our inner teenage metal heads for a few minutes.”

One final song question: which is the song you can always rely on to fill the dance floor?

“Every single cover band that plays pop music probably has the same answer. It’s still Mr. Brightside. Every time, without fail, it will fill the dance floor, and it’s been doing it for 10 years. Even if people don’t think they like it when it starts, they’ll be screaming the lyrics by the end.”

With a line-up so diverse, we wanted to find out if there’s anything in their chemistry that stands out as the fuel for their astonishing performances.

Do you get on with each other all of the time?

“We’ve been together as a cover band for nearly 12 years, and before that three of us made original music together. We’ve been best men at each other’s weddings, lived together, and holidayed together. Our partners are all friends and we try to hangout as much as possible when we’re not gigging. Like most friends, there’s been the odd argument here and there, but we get on pretty much all the time.”

Who has the most annoying habit?

“Ben has a habit of disappearing after the last set, just as we start to pack up. No one knows where he goes, but he does usually come back โ€ฆ”

What’s the best thing about being musicians?

“Making people smile. We get to make wedding days awesome every week, and it’s great to be appreciated. There aren’t many other jobs where people will tell you that you made their day, or that years later everyone is still talking about the excellent work you did.”

โ€ฆ and what’s the worst?

“Late night driving and service station food!”

What’s the weirdest thing that’s happened to you at a wedding or event?

“There’s not that many weird things that’ve happened. The funniest moment was when Ben knocked an open pot of hummus into his smart shoes about 5 minutes before we had to go on. I giggled uncontrollably to myself throughout the first set.”

Most memorable moment?

“Playing 6 Oktoberfest shows in 2017. We played to over 20,000 people over the space of 2 weekends. It was manic but amazing, there were people going absolutely nuts for it!”

If you weren’t musicians, what would you be doing?

“I’d be a writer of sci-fi novels, an astronaut, or a detective. I think Andy would be a fisherman, Ben would be a squash coach – Ollie and Dave I have no idea, maybe something to do with beer?”

Thanks to Apollo Way for taking the time to answer our questions and letting us into their busy world.
